At Hazel Dell Dental Care, your source of cosmetic dentistry in Vancouver, we like to go above and beyond in providing care to our clients. Because of this we offer a number of cosmetic, and hygienic, services including sedation dentistry. In today’s blog we will be discussing sedation dentistry more in depth so that you can have a better idea of when we use it, and why it is used.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a dental procedure that utilizes medication to to help patients relax during procedures. Sometimes, but not often, sedation dentistry can be described as “sleep dentistry” but here at Hazel Dell Dental Care we like to keep it professional and use the term “sedation” so people do not misinterpret the various levels of sedation that is administered.

There are a few different levels of sedation that can be used depending on the invasiveness of the procedure, as well as the patient’s discomfort leading into the procedure. We have listed them below:

  • Minimal Sedation – Minimal sedation is the most minor sedation that is offered in general dentistry. When minimal sedation is administered the patient will be awake, but slightly relaxed.
  • Moderate Sedation – Commonly referred to as “conscious sedation”, moderate sedation is a level of sedation to where patients are known to slur their words, and have a limited recollection of the procedure.
  • Deep Sedation – Deep sedation is the least level of sedation before unconsciousness. Instead, the medication will leave you awake, but barely on the edge of unconsciousness. Typically patients do not remember any of the procedure when deep sedation is administered.
  • General Anesthesia – General anesthesia will render the patient completely unconscious.

Why Do We Offer Sedation Dentistry?

A large portion of the general population has some sort of anxieties associated with going to the dentist. Don’t worry, we won’t take it to heart. It is completely understandable to feel anxious when going to the dentist, as usually a visit to us results in heavy flossing, powerful toothbrushes, high-pressure shooting water, and uncomfortable noises — and that is just for a teeth cleaning.

Typically, sedation dentistry is used for children that have severe anxieties, as well as people that are to undergo more complex procedures that could potentially cause anxieties and discomforts. If you have issues with going to the dentist, there is no reason to simply skip you annual of biannual teeth cleanings. Instead, come in to our Vancouver dental office and ask one of our experienced and caring staff members for more information on sedation dentistry.
